PBR Top 30: Ednei Caminhas, A Resilient Legend in Bull Riding History

by rodeowins

The countdown of the greatest bull riders in PBR (Professional Bull Riders) history begins with the first episode of PBR Top 30, presented by Pendleton Whisky. Among the highlights of this group is Ednei Caminhas, the 2002 world champion, who became the oldest competitor to participate in the PBR World Finals at the age of 46 in 2022. Caminhas’ journey has been marked by multiple retirements over the years, with a 13-year hiatus from the World Finals.

Following his remarkable performance at the World Finals, Caminhas signed a contract with the Texas Rattlers team of the PBR Team Series. Initially skeptical, coach Cody Lambert invited him to a test at his ranch, stating that he needed to lose weight to join the team. Caminhas dedicated himself to training and followed a strict diet, resulting in a 14-kilogram weight loss before making his debut as a Rattler in the inaugural season in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

In addition to aiding in weight loss, the diet served as an additional motivation. After a perfect performance at an event in Austin, where he rode three bulls, Caminhas was rewarded with a hamburger, as promised by Lambert.

His participation in the Team Series allowed Caminhas to revitalize his career and share his extensive experience with younger competitors. Despite facing injuries throughout 2023, his determination and resilience nearly led him to qualify for the 2023 World Finals as a guest of the Velocity Tour.

Currently, Caminhas is not affiliated with any Team Series team, and if he decides to continue competing in 2024, he will need to earn his place in the premier series once again.

Regardless of whether his career ends this year or a decade from now, Caminhas’ place in PBR history is secured. His determination and skill prove that strength and willpower do not diminish with age.
