Creek Young isn’t your typical college graduate. Instead of textbooks, his passion lies in mastering a different kind of ride – the eight-second test on a bucking bull. Now a three-time National Finals Rodeo (NFR) qualifier, Young’s journey began much earlier, on the backs of sheep.
Following a familiar path for many bull riders, Young started young, honing his skills on sheep before graduating to steers and eventually the formidable bulls. The professional rodeo life beckoned strongly, leading him to make a bold decision – graduating high school a semester early.
“College wasn’t the future I envisioned,” Young explains. “Rodeo was my calling, and I wanted to chase a World Title.”
This dedication wasn’t without strategic planning. Before his official rookie year, Young opted for a strategic move – a second year on his PRCA permit. “Professional rodeo requires a different skillset,” he says. “I needed to learn the ropes.”
The extra year paid off. When Young finally secured his professional card in 2021, he hit the ground running. A full season culminated in his first NFR qualification and an impressive fifth-place finish in the world standings. He’d conquered his rookie year with flying colors.
Young’s journey is one of continuous refinement. His core goal remains unchanged, but the “how” is an ongoing pursuit. After falling short of his expectations at some major rodeos in 2023, Young’s focus for 2024 is clear – unwavering confidence at every rodeo, big or small, all with his sights set firmly on that coveted gold buckle.
